In this new Bilbao that is developing since not many years ago, we meet the so international which is the museum Guggenheim Bilbao.

When in 1991 the first ideas for the materialization of a Museum of the Foundation Solomon Guggenheim in the Basque Country began to take form, the fact is that very few people could imagine that after a short time it would become one of the most emblematic and well renowned buildings all over the world.

The architect Frank O. Gehry was the responsible of giving expression to the project that nowadays we know, a capricious structure of titanium, stone and crystal that captivates with his versatile and enchanting curves. In its inside the museum hides the most interesting collections of the contemporary art of the last decades.

Inaugurated in 1997, thousands of persons have contemplated its permanent collections and the impressive temporary collections. A Museum that has returned the prominence to Bilbao in a world increasingly cultural, tourist and globalized.

Bilbao nevermore will be able to imagine itself without the Guggenheim because, the museum, not only has collaborated to changing the image perceived of the city but, in addition, it has contributed in a decisive way to its physical transformation. Today Bilbao is a modern and educated city, at the forefront of the cultural and urban tourism destinations in the whole world.

San Juan of Gasztelugatxe

Between Bermeo and Bakio, a very special, symbolic and beautiful rock, tries to hold on the sea in an attempt to escape from his natural situation. And in this attempt, the rocky place, protected biotope, shapes one of the most emblematic landscapes of the coast of Biscay.

Abrupt and distant, the hermitage of San Juan reach its top. This religious building was constructed in the 10th century in honour of San Juan the Baptist. In the way that takes us to the top, three small footprints remember us the passing, in short peregrination, of many people who before us visited the island. The legend tell us that these footprints are of the Baptist.

After 231 steps we arrive to the hermitage, with 80 meters of slope, and we get into an extraordinary and spectacular landscape, an unavoidable reference in the visit to our land.

Sacked by pirates, Gastelugatze was also refuge and place for disembarkation of pilgrims coming from the whole Europe and in direction towards Santiago de Compostela, using the Way of the Coast.

Resting place and of permanent fight with the strong swell, refuge of marine species and birds, rock that gets into the waters as willing to become in it as well, an abrupt and extraordinary singularity.

The Shuttle Bridge of Bizcay.

One century before the titanium was ending "beached" in the most important artery of Bilbao, in the river mouth of the estuary, another symbol of an epoch of brilliance and of economic development was borning. We speak about the Bridge of Biscay.

On July 28th, 1893, this jewel of the architecture is inaugurated after three years of works. Nowadays it is the most ancient Hanging Bridge all over the World.

Designed by the great architect Alberto Palacio, the bridge resembles in its forms the enigmatic Eiffel Tower, probably because the friendship that joined the constructive worries of both engineers.

The Hanging Bridge or Bridge of Biscay it is a representative of an economic and industrial model, an imperishable symbol of steel and iron that our more nearby past remembers us.

Fundamental link of communication between the two banks of the estuary during decades, today it continues with this job. Nowadays it constitutes itself as an impressive viewing-point, from its 50 meters of height from de water level, of the river mouth of the Nervión and from all those kilometers of water that introduce themselves inside the estuary by the Biscayan metropolis.

An extraordinary viewing-point that shows the past history and the present of Biscay.
