Between Bermeo and Bakio, a very special, symbolic and beautiful rock, tries to hold on the sea in an attempt to escape from his natural situation. And in this attempt, the rocky place, protected biotope, shapes one of the most emblematic landscapes of the coast of Biscay.
Abrupt and distant, the hermitage of San Juan reach its top. This religious building was constructed in the 10th century in honour of San Juan the Baptist. In the way that takes us to the top, three small footprints remember us the passing, in short peregrination, of many people who before us visited the island. The legend tell us that these footprints are of the Baptist.
After 231 steps we arrive to the hermitage, with 80 meters of slope, and we get into an extraordinary and spectacular landscape, an unavoidable reference in the visit to our land.
Sacked by pirates, Gastelugatze was also refuge and place for disembarkation of pilgrims coming from the whole Europe and in direction towards Santiago de Compostela, using the Way of the Coast.
Resting place and of permanent fight with the strong swell, refuge of marine species and birds, rock that gets into the waters as willing to become in it as well, an abrupt and extraordinary singularity. |
